Frequently Asked Questions about ADHD Assessments

What's involved in an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment usually spans three sessions:

  2. Assessment Consult: If deemed eligible, over one or two sessions, you will complete the ADHD assessmemt which may include a further in-depth history, screening tests and tools, and data collection.
  3. Report Consult: Upon completion of the assessments, your psychiatrist will review your results, make a formal diagnosis where relevant, and provide a receive an indepth report. In addition, they will discuss your results and your management options, which can include prescribing medication.
What's the difference between a psychologist and psychiatrist?

The key difference between psychiatrists and psychologists is medical training. Both psychologists and psychiatrists are equally qualified to assess and diagnose ADHD. However, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised training in mental health, and is able to prescribe medication.

What if I want medication after my ADHD diagnosis?

If medication is a management option you would like to explore after your diagnosis, and if your psychiatrist deems suitable, they will be able to prescribe medication.

Am I guaranteed an ADHD diagnosis from my assessment?

No, completing an ADHD assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis of ADHD. Your psychiatrist will take a detailed history, review your assessment and clinical presentation, and make a diagnosis where appropriate.
