What evidence may be accepted?
Deakin may consider its Special Consideration Medical Certificate or an equivalent certificate from the treating health professional. The issuer should be appropriately registered and independent of the student.
Certificate and form requirements
Required form
Deakin's certificate is preferred but not mandatory. Equivalent documentation should contain the affected assessment, practitioner details, dates, signature and a clear assessment of severity and impact.
Consultation modality
Telehealth medical certificates are explicitly accepted, provided the evidence otherwise meets Deakin's requirements.
Previous dates
Evidence should be current and preferably follow consultation on the assessment day or the next day. Backdated certificates are not normally accepted.
Duration
Assignment extensions are generally limited to seven calendar days, or 14 days for some approved student cohorts.
Impact wording
Evidence should explain the nature and duration of the circumstances and whether the effect on attempting or completing the particular task was moderate or severe.
Submission deadline
Ordinary extension requests should be made before the due date. Special consideration applications are generally due within three University working days after the examination or approved submission date.

Minor ailments without moderate or severe academic impact are normally insufficient. Separate applications may be required for each assessment.
